... continued from page one Selina Pereire Selina is not quite satisfied with her performance on Gold Quest and she thinks there is room for improvement. The role is getting easier but she does not want to be too comfortable in it. That's when it ceases to be a challenge and she gets bored. And she wants more new elements in the show and not be like Vanna White doing the same thing everyday. So you were thinking she's a bimbo, huh? As far as public opinion goes, it's the hairstyles that she spots on the show that bears the brunt of the criticisms. It's always 'I didn't like your hairstyle that night'. Occasionally, someone remarks 'I wish you would talk more'. To the latter Selina retorts, "If I talk more, nobody gets to talk anymore! And it would be more of a talk show than a game show." She used to be able to walk out with practically no make up but she doesn't anymore because she feels that she has an image to uphold and that's part of her job. There was once when she was in T-shirt and jeans and she thought it was a really good disguise after the way she was always decked out on the screen. And this guy came up to her and asked if she was that Selina Pereira. She contemplated saying no to avoid disappointing the chap. Luckily he was only interested in being a contestant and she happily confessed to the truth. And the chap went, 'Ooh....' "I didn't know if he was thinking 'Ooh...how awful she looks without make up' or he was flattering me." Needless to say she bursts out laughing again. She dresses up a bit now and she admits there are lots of people who do a double take as she passes by. And she gives us another amusing anecdote. "There was this lady who came up to me and she said to her son, 'Wouldn't Daddy eat his heart out when he knows we actually met her?' I shook the boy's hand and was grateful it wasn't Daddy's." On the whole she wishes that people wouldn't make such a fuss and attract a lot of attention when they recognise her as she feels it's no big deal. That hasn't stopped her going out though. She believes that life goes on. Selina is enjoying a break from shooting and may go back to modelling but it would be more as a hobby now and not bread and butter as it used to be. She prefers working on the catwalk as the feedback is immediate and she doesn't feel she is photogenic enough for photographic modelling. I can't swallow that. I broach the subject of romance. Many viewers think she and Adam are having an affair probably because of the intimate rapport they have on screen. "No more touching from now on," Adam responses quickly. The lady almost chokes and she can't resist a repartee. "Married people don't touch each other." Adam nods his head vigorously. They both agree too that it makes working a lot easier if there is no romantic involvement. Just like any other woman, Selina enjoys romance and she only goes as far as to hint there is someone special at the moment but she's not likely to head for the altar just yet. "I haven't been asked," she adds. I really don't know whether to believe this lady. She hates planning because all her plans have been ruined and she is very suspicious about talking about it if she has any, in case it doesn't materialise. As to what she would go into in the future, she's pretty sure it won't be singing again. Together with Sheila Shanker and Christine Lim, both ex-Miss Malaysia, they formed a group in 1994 and called themselves Untitled, as in without their titles, but they eventually went their own ways. She also doesn't see herself as an actress as she has done a lot of promos for Gold Quest where acting abilities were needed and she feels that it is not easy. Selina lives on her own in an apartment. Being a cat lover she collects cat figurines and has two cats, the live ones. She loves plants and reads a bit. She's very into Asian writers and one of her favourites is Amy Tan. She has a soft spot for Chinese food and is proud that she can cook up a storm. But she laments having to watch out for her figure and being able to indulge in small doses only. "I'm not like Adam who is always the first at the buffet line." She just loves to take a jibe at her partner. She prefers soothing and mellow music and goes for the likes of Julia Fortham or Everything But That Girl. When she is free she hangs around with friends or visits some night spots. What she wears depends on her moods and her figure. When she puts on weight you see her in things that can't tell how big she is. But if she feels good about herself things get closer to the skin.
