The traditional portrait drawing gives emphasis on the lifestyle and activities of
the tribes ar minority races in China, which is not surprising or unusual for those
artists in China.
However, as we are living in a tropical country which does not endear us to the sceneries
found in the northern tribal territories, we should try to have more creativity in
local portrait and drawings and have our own objects as well as expressions familiar
to our living environments and conditions. This might pose a challenge to local artists.
And the idea itself is thought-provoking enough.
For the past few years, I have been trying, through batik drawing, to demonstrate
the unique life styles and characteristics of the Malays. Very naturally, this brings
local flairs into the completed works and it creates another kind of local taste.
