LEICA M6 Platinum Sultan
of Brunei 50th Birthday Edition, 1995

* Back in 1999, a local camera outlet who often lend me his ZUIKO lenses for me to prepare the OLYMPUS OM1/2(N) site told me someone has asked him to dispose a very special LEICA M6 with
a big diamond at the top plate. After spreading news around, weeks later he was stunned
one day that an gentleman who claimed was from Brunei Darussalam came and had took
the camera away and left him with RM50,000-00 (approx. USD13,500-00). The man only
told him it was a stolen "governmental property" but not mentioned the
exact whereabouts he was represented. Prior to that, the shop owner had took a few
pictures just for references and had given me a few prints. Okay, when I moved my
office to current premises, I couldn't locate where did I kept the originals but I do remember
I did scanned them for safekeeping just in case one day I might need them for site
development references. On the other hand, I have been patiently collecting interesting
LEICA pictures from Ebay auction sales for about 6-7 years too.
There is a little unsure things with these series of photos published herein this
site. i.e. I got mixed up and couldn't remember if these photos were the original
scanned photos given by the shop or they were the ones that were downloaded from
accumulated auction sales images. JUST
IN CASE these are from different
source, then I would like to sincerely apologize openly here and will rectify the
mistake immediately by giving appropriate credit back to the rightful owner (the
shop owner couldn't recall exactly of those were his because the episode was occurred
almost 10 years ago). Usage of these well taken pictures appeared in this section
are simply published for educational and online reading references which relate to
various variants of LEICA M6 series. But just on the sage side, if ever anyone of
you who may be one of the rare proud owner of this camera, do consider taking some
well taken photos of this model for me to replace these unsure state with no confirmed
and/or unrecorded source (sorry ..). Because as long as I still can't locate the
rightful owner or photographers who took these images, I will always be feeling a
little uneasy in using them for online publishing. Thank You.

INTRODUCTION:- According to what I can
gather, the current Sultan, Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam, His Majesty
Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah was born in 15th July, 1946. His
50th Birthday fell exactly in 1996. The special occasion was well celebrated by all
walks of life in the oil & Gas rich Nation. Hundreds of honorable guests /international
personalities/celebrities were being invited such as Prince Charles of England etc.
- which included Michael Jackson who was specially flown in from US to provide three
consecutive performances for public with an unconfirmed bill of USD16million. One
way or another, many lifestyle observers still share a common opinion that 50th birthday
has to be the most memorable (and expensive) of all which could top up to a total
cost of USD 27 Million - easily can be recorded as the most expensive birthday party
held in human history ever.

For some unexplained reason; after the
1992's first attempt with the LEICA M6 Sultan's Silver Jubilee 24 carat Gold -plated / Platinum-plated Edition, a special edition of LEICA M6 to commemorate the special royal occasion
again had been brought up and implemented. This time around we had witnessed birth
of differently configured Leica M6. First of all, I have to clarify I know nobody
in the Palace, neither I know any Leica folks live in Brunei Nor having any VIP friend
who may good enough recognized to be a honorable guest to find out exact number or
objective in this 1995 special M6 releases: i.e. Leica M6 Sultan of Brunei Special
50th Birthday Edition includes: LEICA M6 Platinum each w/Diamond issued in total
limited quantity of 150 units; LEICA M6 Platinum with special engraving issued in
200 Units as well as LEICA M6 with special engraving and Gold plated body/lens in
350 units. So far, I have managed to track and found evidence of existence of M6
Platin/Diamond as well as the Leica M6 Platinum without Diamond copies but still
had not found the related Gold plated model with special engraving. So, if anyone
is having these OR a more accurate information that relates please help to furnish
the detail to patch up the gray-info area. NOTE: Actually I am having the idea to
write to Palace official in Brunei later to see if these info can be released as
I don't intend to mislead anyone with unconfirmed data. No harm done right ?
