K.L.C.C. by night...
A lot of time and effort was involved to set up this nightscape of K.L.C.C., thanks to the management of K.L. Tower I was allowed into the banquet hall for the shoot. In virtually all nightscape pictures, there are not enough details in the shot because of the huge range of exposure differences in the scene. I decided to try out a very old technique used by industrial photographers. Many many years ago, reputable industrial photographers will set up their large format camera on study tripod and exposed their "scene" just after the sunset to get the subtle detail. Then he will wait for the neon lights and street lights ect to appear before he took a second exposure on the same neagative. This "double exposure" retained the shadow detail AND the highlight of the night scene.
Mine is a modified "electronic version" of the age old technique.
The scene was shot with a Canon EOS1n, 28-70 lens at 28mm on Kodak Supra ASA400 negative film. The camera was mounted on a solid pro-carbon fiber tripod, with the lens virtually touching the thick glass window at the banquet hall of KL Tower. Three exposures were made at three different time to retain the shadow detail. The three negatives were then scanned with a Kodak RFS3520 scanner and "put together" in Photoshop. Three adjusment layers were used to to get the desired contrast and tonal range.Copyright © 2000. CYLeow ®
