Non-Ai 135mm f/2.8 Nikkor

The 135mm focal length lens is universally recognized as a versatile optic because of its adaptability to a wide range of photographic applications as diverse as portraiture and sports photography. Nikkor 135mm at f/2.8 lens was first introduced in 1965 and since then, it has gained momentum as one of the best seller at this focal length. This lens has gone through a number of changes with its original design in 4 elements in 4 groups; a few quick updates occurred between 1974 and 1977 which is well segmented below by Roland Vink:

C-mount 135/2.8 380001 - 394678 - 421067 1974 - 03/75 4/4
K-mount 135/2.8 430001 - 438613 - 465000 06/75 - 03/76
4/4
K -mount 135/2.8 730001 - 737653 - 751805 - ? 01/76 - 1977
5/4

The lens shown below was among the 135mm f/2.8 Nikkor that was sold in 1975-1976 which well indicated it was a last version of the older 4 elements in 4 groups design version prior to a new lens in 5 elements in 4 groups design. However, some versions surfaced lately may indicate this lens could have also a pre-AI version with the new optical formula used in the next 1977 AI upgrade where reference book such as Nikon Hand Book by Peter Braczko claimed it was introduced in April, 1976. This excellent lens allows photographer an excellent compromise in combination of features and performance to ensure its continued popularity as the preferred 135mm lens to choose. This model has a relatively bright maximum aperture of f/2.8 that enables operation in all but the darkest lighting conditions: thus, this unit can be used even indoors for coverage of action events to achieve the image magnification with slightly flattened perspective that characterizes this medium telephoto lens.

135mmf28preAI.jpg
Viewing and focusing are very bright, with shallow depth of field for quick operation; also, the fully automatic diaphragm and meter coupling prong ensure full aperture shooting convenience at all times.

Further complementing the outstanding optical performance is the application of NIC for reduced flare and ghost, with improved color rendition. The lens also features a slip-out type lens hood built into the body, as well as the new standard rubberized focusing ring and knurled aperture ring.

When available light shooting is not the prime requirement or if your have a tight budget to spare on a prime telephoto lens, the 135mm f/3.5 Nikkor is often the preferred medium telephoto selection because of its more compact size and light weight. This Iens, similar in size and weight to the 105mm Nikkor lens, provides exceptionally crisp images with high contrast and reduced chromatic aberration for excellent results, even at full aperture. This unit produces excellent results for a wide range of telephoto shooting applications including animal, travel, landscape, portraiture, and even close-up photography. The f/22 minimum aperture setting also enables increased depth of field for situations requiring such extend of control.

<<<---- Scanned from a Nikon sales leaflet published in 1976. A non-AI Nikkor 135mm f/2.8 lens came with a newer appearance placed beside a non-AI Nikkor 135mm f/3.5 lens.

135mmf35preAI.jpg 135mmf35preAIoptsml.gif
Full viewing/metering convemence is assured via the fully automatic diaphragm and meter coupling prongs fitted; these enable full aperture operation at all times for the brightest images. NIC was believed to have been applied for the first time in this lens for top-quality results. This non-AI version eventually went through a major revamp in its design, dimension and performance in the next AI upgrade in 1977.
