Information on Nikon Series E Lenses
We have corresponded before regarding your Nikon site, which I have found to be extremely useful, and such a great asset to all us Nikon enthusiasts. I have a question, in connection with some things about Series E lenses. "... AI-S lenses that are shorter (135mm for Nikkor, 100mm for E series) will not share the high speed program in FA but remains with the standard program mode."
I think this is intended to mean that the high speed alternative function of the P mode of the FA will not be triggered by lenses shorter than: 135mm for Nikkor lenses, and 100mm for Series E lenses. The necessary corollary is that ones that long or longer will trigger the high speed P function.
The lens computability chart for the FA at http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/nikonfmount/faf4compatchart.htm clearly states the 100mm Series E will activate the high speed function in the FA's P mode. I think the lens pictured at http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/nikonfmount/lens3.htm is supposed to be a 100mm Series E, and it clearly has the focal length indicator post, but my Series E 100mm f2.8 (scan of rear attached) has no such thing. I have noticed this statement at other places on the site. I don't have a 135mm Series lens to check, but I'm not sure such a check would be conclusive anyway, as I have seen AIS lenses over 135mm without this Focal Length Indicator Post. At any rate, I don't think it can be said that all Series E lenses 100mm or longer will activate the "fast" P mode on the FA, as mine doesn't have the focal length post to do it with.
I'm curious as to the source of your information that all Series E lenses 100mm and longer with shift the P mode on the FA.
Thanks. -- Rick Housh --
