Nikon Speedlight SB-18

A mid price, compact and convenient auto TTL flash originally for entry level Nikon bodies such as FG, FG-20, F-301 and even for the AF F501, but since it has full TTL capability, other TTL Nikon SLR such as Nikon FA and FE2 with standard ISO-type accessory shoe can also be used freely. It is highly portable, easy to setup and will perform TTL flash exposure control with Nikon SLR bodies that have a built-in sensor measuring flash light through the lens. And the camera automatically controls flash output.

Thus, you can use virtually any aperture within its working range you like (i.e., f/2 to f/16 at ASA/ISO 100) and get a pretty good exposure. The SB-18 has a Ready-lights on the unit and in the viewfinder indicate when the flash is charged.

Useful accessory:- Nikon original Flash couplers for various flash models foot incompatibility

Note by Lars on SB-18: SB-18 has no PC (or multi TTL socket) so ".. older sync cord may.." NOT be used ! SB-18 has NO open flash button and the only contact is the OFF-M -TTL selector. (Normal AUTO flash is not possible)

Nikon Speedlight SB-19

An entry level Speedlight designed as a companion flash unit for compact bodies such as FG, FG-20, EM but can also use on many other Nikon SLRs.

The SB-19 is a compact, lightweight and offers automatic flash output control capability.

The SB-19 has a guide number of 20 (ASA/ISO 100, in meters). It allows you to use a wide range of apertures f/2 (with a flash-to-subject distance of 2.1-10 m ) to f/11 (with a flash-to-subject distance of 0.6-1.7m), at ASA/ISO 100. The information on film speed and lens aperture are automatically fed into the speedlight for compatible electronic Nikon SLR bodies, for added ease of operation. Shutter speed is then electronically set to 1/90sec. The SB-19 can be directly mounted onto a Nikon camera with a standard ISO-type accessory shoe.

Compared to the equally compact SB-E Speedlight designed for the Nikon EM, the SB-19 has a broader working film speed range of ASA 25-1600 as compared with the SB-E or SB-9's ASA 25-400. Further, the SB-19 has a better power efficiency than SB-E with 250 flashes on a set of 4 AA penlight batteries as compared to SB -E's 80. However, the SB-E is far lighter than the SB-19 by 40g. The A-B mode has differing working ranges: "A" for one usable aperture and "B" for wide range of aperture with SB-19. "A" is for any Nikon SLR and "B" is for the Nikon EM with SB-E). The SB-19 looks like a better buy if given a choice between the two. These units are not supposed to be priced too high as they have been discontinued.

* Nikon warns of incompatibility when used flash coupler AS-4, AS-7 (or AS-17 ) with a viewfinder other than the standard eye level finder DE-2 or High Eyepoint Finder DE-3. With AS-4, AS-7 on Nikon F3, both auto and manual flash is possible.

If you have a non-TTL flash capable camera body and if prices quoted to you are expensive, try to check around for some third party flash such as Vivitar 283 or 383 which are also some of the good alternatives.
