Micro-Nikkor 200mm f/4 IFFor field work macro photography, this lens is an excellent choice.
The AF version was given a pleasant surprise: an IF ED model. What it means, other than those who are sourcing for a flexible high quality telephoto lens at this specific focal length, here is a new option. The Nikkor family has a ED version at 180mm f2.8, next closest is the 200 f2, both IF ED designated. Well, they certainly did a good calculation: You can't have the best of both world. The 180mm can't get macro, 200mm only fixed at f4...
Eventually, I bought the AF-D Micro-Nikkor 200mm f4 ED-IF. It is BIG, heavy - BUT provide very satisfactory results. It goes down to 1:1 life size without the need of any extension tube. Obviously, I wish it is like the non-ED version in size and weight, but these seem a distant dream. The tripod collar on the AF lens cannot be detached as with the older non-ED version.
The new AF version comes with featured packed "goodies", but physically, just too long for comfort..
Macro lenses at longer focal lengths (compared with the 55 or 60mm) can have another advantage, it can maintain a more natural perspective while providing a "comfortable" work distance between the photographer & the subject of interest. This lens provides a picture coverage of 12° 20'. Takes 52mm filters (A good point), IF (Internal focusing) keeps the size unchange while focusing and filters like gradual, neutral density or Polarizing etc doesn't rotate. Comes with a built in telescopic lens hood (with clisck stops) and a 360° removable, rotatable tripod socket collar when you wish to do hand held shooting. Optical construction based on 9 elements in 6 groups and weighing 800g.
To achieve 1:1 reproduction ratio, you have to mount the TC-300 telecoverter (Originally dedicated to Nikkor lenses of 300mm & above). The lens alone will only go to maximum 1:2 ratio.
This lens was the first macro lens ever to utilise the internal focusing technology when it was first launched way back in 1979.
