Focusing Screen
The focusing screen, which makes precise focusing possible, also determines the metering sensitivity area (pattern). By changing the focusing screen, you can change the metering area to suit the subject and the lens in use. There are three different light metering systems available, each designed to suit a different situation.

Center-Weighted Average Metering
Selective Area Metering
Spot Metering
Note: The actual measuring area is slightly shaded and with selective area and spot metering it can be seen in the center of the viewfinder.
Meter Coupling Range
The metering range of the silicon photo-cell is EV1 to EV20, however, the meter works between EV6 (1/30 see, f/1.4) and EV20 (1/2000 see, f/22) when using ISO 100 film.
Changing the Focusing Screen
1) To remove the finder, press the two release buttons and pull it straight back.
2) Insert a fingernail into one of the notches and lift up the screen.
Note: If there is film loaded, shield the camera from direct sunlight while changing the screen.
3) To remove the screen, pick it up by its frame. Never touch the Fresnel side (the underside when in the camera).
4) Insert the unnotched side (side with screen name) of a new screen under the metal tab, and push the other side down until the screen drops into a fully-seated position
5) Aligning the finder with the guide rails, push it in so that it locks with a click.
Notes:
1) To avoid marring its surface, lay the screen upside down with the Fresnel side up.
2) AE photography is not possible even if the AE Finder FN is attached.
Each screen is named according to metering area and type.
The three metering areas are designated as follows:
A—Center-weighted Average Metering
P—Selective-area (Partial) Metering
S—Spot Metering
The last two letters in the screen's name denote metering area and bPe of screen respectively. Thus, Focusing Screen FN-PE offers selective-area metering and is the E-type, or New Split/Microprism screen.

Flash Photography
Align the "60" of the shutter dial with the index. That sets the shutter speed to the X sync speed. Attach the flash either using the hot shoe, for a flash with direct contact, or the PC socket on the side of the camera, for a cord connect type. Notes: 1) Canon Speedlites DO NOT function as dedicated flash units with this camera. If they are used, the shutter speed and the aperture must be set manually. 2) When deciding the exposure for flash photography by the guide number calculation, add 0.8 f/stop more to the exposure value to compensate for the reflectance of the pellicle mirror.3) Multiple flash photography using both the hot shoe and a cord is also possible.
Remote Control Photography
Remote control photography is possible using a remote control accessory such as the Extension Cord E1000 (cord length 10 m). For remote control, plug the cord into the remote control socket on the camera. If a cord longer than 1 Om is necessary, connect a second cord to the first one, continuing to connect cords until the desired length is reached. (several cords can be connected at the same time).
Camera Neck strap and Belts
With this camera it is possible to connect the battery case directly to the camera body, or to separate it for greater shooting mobility. Use the belts provided according to your taste.
When the battery case is separated
Attach the camera neck strap as illustrated.
