Canon Speedlite 480EG

This unusual shape, bracket/grip-type flash unit boasting a high, maximum guide no. of 48 (m), or 158 (ft.), at ISO 100. Wide- and tele-panels provide flash coverage angles for 20mm and 135 mm focal lengths respectively. Connecting it to a Ni-Cd Pack TP reduces the recycle time to 0.2 to 6 sec. which makes It a perfect companion flash for who who is seeking a powerful flash for repeating flash photography (come to think of it, the circular flash tubes reminds me of the Nikon Repeating flash SB-6 of the '70). The 480EG also accepts separately purchased Battery Pack E. Even in used condition, I have seen this bracket handle flash sold for approx. USD500-00. With a maximum guide number of 68/223 (ISO 100 m/ft), the 480EG is Canon's most powerful grip-style electronic flash. Its wide range of exposure control options, as well as its unique clamp-and-bracket design, emphasize durability and simple operation. The only complain you can pick on it is, it is quite heavy (weighs 1,065g even without batteries installed inside). But for works that demands the most powerful and dependable artificial illumination, here is one that you can count on.

The TTL 480EG System was designed to meet requirement of professional photographers who may require powerful, fast recycling speed in demanding night photo sessions. This large, rugged flash with a bracket and a hand grip offers powerful light output of guide number 160 @ ISO 100, ft.. Another trademarks is its short recycling time and versatility to work in many situations. It can offer TTL automatic exposure control with AF-EOS and even older MF camera such as T90 via the TTL Shoe Cord E; the built-in sensor can also provide auto flash control with any Canon (or even other camera labels) that equipped with PC socket/terminal via Synchro Cord 480. Manual flash exposure control can be set by 3 stages settings - full, 1/4 and 1/16X reduction. The 480EG has an unusual twin flash tubes in a circular reflector which was designed to provide uniform light distribution across up to picture angle of a 20mm ultrawide. It is a heavy-duty, durable constructed unit and come with a higher price tag than most conventional shoe-mount Canon flash. Rapid recycling and great versatility to work in or outdoor.

Canon 480EG High performance speedlite
" ... Canon EOS 480EG speedlight flash unit. It is in excellent condition, with only a little wear. Compatible with Canon EOS Rebel series, Elan series, 600 series, etc.  This flash has a bounce head for natural and professional flash lighting techniques. The guide number is approximately 223ft with 100 ASA film. It operates as an E-TTL flash giving the most accurate exposures working with metering system in your Canon EOS camera. This would be a great flash to add to your Canon EOS camera system! Includes a CZ Quantum power cord..."

The Canon 480EG offers TTL flash exposure with EOS models and even with the older Canon T90 as it has an external sensor for use with earlier Canon models (via TTL automatic flash is obtained by using TTL Shoe Cord E to connect the 480EG to the accessory shoe of an EOS or T90 camera). This Canon 480EG is only available in some markets. Below are a few dedicated accessories which were designed to expand capabilities of the flash to greater height.

Off-Camera Shoe Cord 2 Allows a dedicated Speedlite to be used off camera with all the automatic features intact. Great for varying the lighting angle for close subjects. Extends up to 60 cm (2 ft).
Canon Off-Camera Shoe Cord 2
This Canon accessory allows you to connect your Canon Speedlite on one end of the cord and the other end will be mounted to the Hot Shoe unit of your EOS camera. You can stretch the accessory's cord by up to 0.6 metres long and away from the camera in any shooting degrees you wish to point the flash towards your intended subject. Except for EOS 630 and the pellicle mirrored-equipped Canon EOS RT, this Off camera Shoe Cord 2 works with virtually all the current EOS cameras Good thing is, it is an affordable , dedicated accessory, handy for achieving off-camera flash photography without the harsh shadows behind your subjects common when using direct flash exposures. Note: When you are using the TTL Hot Shoe Adaptor 2 with the Off-Camera Shoe Adaptor, A-TTL is not possible and it will revert to normal TTL.

The Off Camera Shoe Cord 2 unit also come with a built-in tripod socket at the other end where the Speedlite unit is attached to which permits it to be locked onto a tripod and frees your hand from holding the off-camera flash. Please take note: All the external power sources of the 540EZ are used in common with the 430EZ. The flash sync shutter speed and the availability / unavailability of an out-of-coupling-range warning when using A-TTL preflash are different depending on the model.

Canon Battery Pack E Canon Transistor Pack E Set
Compact Battery Pack E Compact external power pack. Usable with many EOS camera models. When used with the 540EZ's internal batteries, in particularly, it reduces the recycling time to 0.2 to 5 sec. Uses six size-AA alkaline or Ni-Cd batteries.

Transistor Pack E Set External power pack available for two types of size C batteries: Dry cells and Ni-Cd The dry cell set includes Battery Magazine TP and Connecting Cord ET. The Ni-Cd set includes Ni-Cd Pack TP, Ni-Cd Charger TP, and Connecting Cord ET.

NOTE:The current (2005) Battery Pack CP-E3 is designed for exclusive use with Speedlites. 580EX, 550EX but also USABLE with 540EZ, 430EZ, MR-14EX and MT-24EX. Accepts 8 AA Alkaline, Ni-Cd, Ni-MH or lithium batteries.

If you have a Canon 580ex, 550EX, 540EZ or 430EZ flash and need faster, longer lasting flash performance, the Compact Battery Pack CP-E3, will definitely help to provide that. The thin and compact unit accommodates eight AA sized batteries and when connected provides the extra power needed to enable faster recycle times for a longer period of time, than when just using the basic flash unit alone. Its recycling times is approx. 1.7 second, excellent for an extended shooting period. Using Ni-MH type rechargeable batteries, probably provides a maximum performance in this combination.

Multiple Flash System Enables multiple flash units to be used with TTL auto flash metering. Up to four Speedlites. can be set up. The maximum extension length is 9m/29.5 ft.

The Canon multiple flash accessories allow you to use up to four (4) flash units for one exposure. Either TTL flash auto exposure or manual control can be used, giving the flexibility needed to handle almost any lighting situation that requires artificial illumination. Controlled lighting effects can be obtained by varying the distances of the Speedlites. from the subject. A basic two light portrait that set up can be obtained, for example, by positioning the first Speedlite to one side as the main light. with fill in illumination from the second Speedlite used from the front, but further away than the main Speedlite. Multiple flash set ups are especially useful for still life and close up photography where additional Speedlites. can be used for backlighting or for illuminating tire background. Results rivaling those produced with professional studio equivalent are possible.
