100-200mm f/4.5A Tele-Zoom lens
Marketed: 12.1988; Discontinued: probably 1992
Background: Canon used to have a FD version of the FD 100-200mm f/5.6 S.C. but it was not very popular as the FD 85-300mm f/4.5 S.S.C. or the subsequent Canon FDn 100-300mm f/5.6(L) zoom lenses. But all those "oldies" did laid a path for better things to come when the EF/EOS system was officially introduced back in 1987.

Designed for use with virtually all EOS cameras (errr .. except for the Canon EF-M), the EF 100-200mm f/4.5A is a compact zoom lens which produces high-quality action, portrait, and landscape pictures as the f/4.5 maximum aperture provides good, all round usage. The light weight design makes it the perfect zoom lens for travel. But the most appealing element of this zoom lens is, it is also very affordable, due to its simplified lens design (no manual focusing). Lens stability is maintained throughout the focal range of the EF 100-200mm f/4.5A due to its simplified construction. Even for seasoned EOS users may not get used to design of this zoom as it does not has a distance window for visual reference. |
I guess for people who may be seeking for a longer focal length tele-zoom would be more interested in the 100-300mm f/5.6 versions; but on and off, this zoom lens does surfaced regularly in the used market and I would think it was once quite a popular lens among the many entry EOS photographers back in the late '80.This Canon zoom has no USM configuration and the AF actuator is a Arc-Form Drive (AFD) motor which provides reasonably fast, accurate autofocusing. And, as with all Canon EF lenses, the Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EMD) control allows for precise electronic control of aperture settings. While Canon's super spectra coating enables images to be reproduced with true-to-life color. One of the good thing about this zoom is its maximum magnification which reaches 0.13X and eliminates the needs for close-up accessory should the situation requires for close-up shots.
Anyway, Canon was not alone in providing a 100-200mm
2X zoom ratio tele-zoom, as rivaling Company like Konica-Minolta also used to has
a similar Minolta AF 100-200mm f/4.5 zoom lens for the Maxxum class AF SLRs with the same aperture
of f/4.5 as the Canon. There ain't much info you can gather for this Canon old zoom
(even Canon Museum has no picture to illustrate other than bare basic information
on lens data). Well, here - I
would think some good illustration of photos taken by this lens is welcome for this
site.
