PRECISELY MATCHED LENS INFORMATION

During the early part of '80, many camera manufacturers have introduced their respective innovation in areas such as semi-automatic data bridging between camera and lenses. These were required as sophistication is program exposure control would require information of lenses to be remitted to the camera for more accurate metering calculation. Some manufacturers installed intelligent program exposure where focal length was calculated to provide higher shutter speed in case lenses are beyond 135mm. The communication method were confined to mechanical means such as using notch, pins and ridges. However, some may require exposure control be altered if lens with varying focal length was changed.

With Canon EOS system, there's no need to worry about changing exposure programs even when you change lenses as the communication data exchange is entirely electronic and each Canon EF lens incorporates a four-bit microprocessor that stores data reflecting the special characteristics of the lens. When the lens is changed (or when an EOS zoom lens' focal length is increased or decreased), the EOS 650's intelligent program AE automatically shifts the exposure program in accordance with lens information to ensure correct exposure.
In addition, the EOS 650 sounds a long electronic beeper tone to warn of camera-shake when the automatically set shutter speed becomes too slow for handheld photography; that is, 0 to 0.5 steps below 1/lens focal length, generally said to be the limit for handheld shooting.

THE EF LENS MOUNT - Getting outstanding response, accuracy and reliability, plus unlimited potential for the future

contactsection.jpg
Everyone knows that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. With body autofocus systems, the weakest link is the conventional mechanical coupling between the camera body and the lens. Canon's EOS autofocus system, on the other hand, utilizes a fully electronic mount-there are no mechanical connections whatsoever between the camera body and the lens. The new precision machined EF (Electro-Focus) lens mount features gold-plated electronic contacts that transmit data between the central computer in the camera and the onboard computer (which controls autofocus and aperture control functions) in the lens.

Since there are no mechanical connections, response, accuracy and reliability are all improved in comparison with conventional systems. In addition, the autofocus drive system can still be used when an extender or extension tube (anticipated Canon releases in the future) are mounted.

Canon developed BASIS Sensor

Early EOS system employed with an innovative sensing device - the Canon BASIS (Base-Stored Imaging Sensor) which has a high level of sensitivity, resultant in enabling the EOS 650 delivers a high performance in low light conditions rated as low as EV1 (Bright Are Luminance) condition sometimes even manual focusing find it impossible.

The BASIS sensor increases autofocus sensitivity in two ways: by enabling the use of very low value incidence light signals and by amplifying these signals before processing them. As a result, the photographer may even work and focus accurately in condition as dim as a single candle light source.
