Modern AE (auto Exposure) SLR cameras usually provide a host of options to allow user to preselect a particular type of exposure control method to handle a given photographic scenario. EOS 650 offers conventional exposure control modes such as Intelligent Program AE, Shutter Priority AE, Aperture-Priority AE and Manual Override. Among the available options, there is a Depth of Field AE mode which remains exclusive with the EOS650 and strangely has been omitted in the more serious EOS 620.

DEPTH OF FIELD AE One of the interesting offering in the EOS650 was the depth of field AE feature. It allows user to choose what part or parts of an image will be in focus. Once that has been decided, the EOS 650 will automatically set the exposure to provide the required depth of field.

For explanation purposes, let's say that there are two subjects that the photographer wants in focus. With the camera in the depth of field AE mode, the user simply points the lens at the nearest subject and presses the shutter button halfway; the EOS autofocus system will gauge the distance to the subject. The autofocus system is then used to determine the distance to the second subject. The computer then selects the aperture value that will give the required depth of field, and a shutter speed that will ensure correct exposure.

When explaining this function, keep in mind that your prospect has little if any experience with SLR photography. Communicate how this feature gives easy control both over fast-moving subjects (the user can set a focus zone and then shoot as the subject enters the zone), and depth of field for a sharp subject on film.

CANON EF lenses Another significant advantage of the development of EOS system was the the availability of a new series of Canon EF lenses. The larger diameter of the lens mount has enabled possibilities of a breed of fast lens speed optic never possible with 35mm photography.

With the EOS system, Canon camera uses can take advantage of interchangeable lens flexibility and professional-level lens quality offer by the EF optic. Unbeatable combination of precision craftsmanship, professional-level quality and leading-edge technology are hallmark of the Canon EOS autofocus lenses.

The EF lens family has around 14 lenses with a teleconverter debuted with the EOS 650 in 1986. It has hence, mushroomed as the largest autofocus system in 35mm photography with (up to 1996) more than
10 million of EF lenses sold worldwide !

The EF lens and the EOS camera body is two integral systems that supplementing each other. You may use the table below to see comparison between Canon and other camera manufactures and probably it can help you to understand the significant advantages of the Canon system presents.

CANON LENS-INTEGRAL DESIGN VS. BODY-INTEGRAL SYSTEMS

Other Manufacturer's Choice

Canon's Opinion & Choice

Body shape

No significant difference

Increased flexibility without motor-mechanism coupling

Lens shape

-

Large, heavy, and irregular (bulging)

With proper motor placement, weight and size do not differ significantly from ordinary lenses or the tubular shape

Performance

No difference in general characteristics

Fast & q quiet- regardless of lens focal length of the lens in use

Operability

-

Various restrictions make development of efficient motors difficult

Development and use of AFD, USM and EMD maximize operational efficiency

Cost

-

Expensive overall system

Lower body cost, lens cost increase eliminated by lack of coupling mechanism

Future prospects

-

Difficult to upgrade because of body and lens limitations

No restrictions imposed by mechanical coupling freedom to replace mechanical structure with electronics and full adaptability to the future

Each Canon EF lens has two completely new, circular motors, one for autofocus and the other for aperture control. For autofocus, the lens has either the AFD (Arc Form Drive) or USM (Ultrasonic Motor), and for aperture control the EMD (Electro- Magnetic Diaphragm). Thanks to these Canon-developed motors, the EF lenses retain the smooth, round shape of the traditional camera lens, are very fast, and offer extremely high accuracy. Symbols: Excellent Good
